ok I get it. as you develop your business strategy to fulfill your goal of becoming a successful full time entrepreneur, networking isn’t the first tool that comes to mind but it should be. why? i’m glad you asked. relationships are the new currency of business....scratch that. the right relationships have always been the currency of business yet you may not be aware of this truth because you may have been too busy networking wrong. no worries we
highly successful entrepreneurs build strategic relationships
let’s reframe the word “networking” if the negative connotation that you associate with the word conjures up feelings of uneasiness. instead focus on what you are really doing and that’s connecting your business to who you choose to serve. building business relationships intentionally gives you a greater chance at a successful business when used as one component of a larger smart business strategy. developing the right business relationships through networking has to be strategic if your goals include:
connect with your village
who knows what you do?
we all know the saying “it’s not what you know but who you know”. someone upped the anty and decided “it’s not who you know but who knows you”. well I can do you one better, “it's what you know, it's who you know, it's who knows you and who knows what you do”. if you have a business and only a select few people are aware of it, does your business really exist? if you need a particular resource or contact but you haven’t shared your need with anyone, can they help you directly or connect you to someone in their Circles of INfluence? the answer to both questions is no. your business is not scaleable or sustainable without a solid network of influencers and people smarter than you. you must be able to intentionally glean from and engage with your business community. your village. it takes a village to raise a child and a business. you will not be able to safely and securely transition to full time entrepreneurship without help from like-valued people, other entrepreneurs, mentors, advisors, creatives and prospective leads. my first two or three business ventures out I thought I could succeed based upon what i thought i knew, who I knew and one or two people knowing the basics about my skills. i found out the hard way my village then wasn't nearly sufficient of a network to build a business. you don't have to make the same mistake.
kicking the cubicle to the curb
be your chief ambassador
always remember that success can’t work if you don’t work your strategy. being an entrepreneur means you wear many hats and one of those hats is chief ambassador of your brand. no matter how great your product or service...
...if the masses you are meant to serve don’t know you exist, you’re wasting your time.
this is why it is essential that as an entrepreneur you find a niche you love and build a business around it. doing so will ensure you love your business enough to never tire of promoting your solution for others during the growing phase. business relationship building done right removes the unpleasantness of connecting. an added benefit are the opportunities to accelerate the process to reap the rewards of intentional connecting. using a simple strategy you’ll see that INtentionally connecting and engaging with mentors, entrepreneurs, collaborators, partners and customers is enjoyable because you’re building with people where there is genuine synergy. the reason your current networking efforts are awkward is due to your lack of a focused strategy that informs the understanding of why and what networking really should be and that's INtentional connecting. no one understands the plight of an entrepreneur better than another entrepreneur with like minded or more ambitious goals and aspirations.
